Why did they sponsor the Environmental Design Pocketbook?
James Traynor from ECD architects says: “I wish this book had been around when I was a student! The Environmental Design Pocketbook condenses so much invaluable information in one handy guide and helps prioritise the many competing aspects of the design challenge. We are very happy to play our part in ensuring that this book continues to be available to as many people as possible – especially students. Several members of our office were involved in the writing of this guide we are very pleased to sponsor this book.
Sofie has made, and continues to make, a significant contribution towards ensuring sustainable design (both new build and refurbishment) is at the forefront of the architectural debate. Despite advances made by Industry, Government and others there is still much to be done if we in the building industry are to play our part in meeting Climate Change commitments. This book is an important tool for architects and others in ensuring this happens.”

Jo McCafferty, Director at Levitt Bernstein: "For us at Levitt Bernstein, sponsorship of the Environmental Design Pocketbook, has been a key part of a desire to raise awareness and knowledge of sustainable design within the profession and specifically in the housing sector. Initially as a member of the practice (2003-08) and subsequently a consultant (2008-09), we have benefitted from Sofie's involvement in some of our most environmentally progressive projects, some of which informed the key details in Chapter 9.
Sponsorship of the Environmental Design Pocketbook has been a key extension of this partnership between academic research and architectural practice. We hope that the Pocketbook will be as useful and informative for clients and policymakers, as it is for architects. Succinct, packed with facts and figures and yet accessible, it is an essential read for everyone involved in the design, construction and commissioning of buildings. It has already become a firm favourite with staff in our practice."

Brian Murphy Founder of GreenSpec/NGS: we still have the ambition to become the encyclopedia of environmental design and construction. Despite it being a very popular website, it's developing slower than we would like. Sofie Pelsmakers’ book promised to become a substantial part of what we would do if we had more money and more time and it was happening now. The first drafts showed Sofie’s response to architects' reluctance to read, with wonderful sketches and a plethora of tables, rules of thumb and checklists; the perfect approach.
Knowing how often students and architects ask ‘Where do I find that information?’, we know why Sofie set out to write it and how important it is that she did. No longer the need to maintain lists of websites and no longer the necessity to buy so many books or subscribe to so many websites and information services.
My signed copy goes with me everywhere and I show it at every opportunity, it’s great to see the reactions, ‘nice sketches’ ‘wow’ and be asked ‘Where can I buy it?’ ‘What's the bar code number?’ Seeing who else was involved, this was a mammoth task and we cannot think of anyone better placed to have done it and to have been able to complete it. It is a wonderful achievement, one that GreenSpec are proud to have been part of and I wholeheartedly commend Sofie and The Environmental Design Pocket Book, to all."
