ABOUT The Environmental Design Pocketbook
2nd edition
Written by Sofie Pelsmakers, this handy illustrated pocketbook focuses on how to design new low energy buildings. It does all the hard work for you, distilling the most relevant information about sustainable design theory, technology, building science, current legislation and best practice into a simple format that is quick and easy to use. Written for architects and students of architecture as well as engineers, planners, clients and developers, this handy pocketbook for low energy building design should help you design truly sustainable buildings. It covers principally housing design in the UK, but many principles apply elsewhere. The Environmental Design Pocketbook has been commended and received both good press, reviews and reader and industry support.
Each chapter has key recommendations which are based on the synthesis of scientific observations and practical building experience. The pocketbook is intended to distil and complement current legislation, guidance and other design manuals, as well as to draw emerging research into a single source with suggested key reading in each section for the reader who hungers for more detail.
The 2nd edition has much new material, adding almost 80 pages and bringing the book to almost 500 pages. It is therefore printed on thinner FSC sourced paper (edition 1was printed on thicker recycled paper) bound with a flexible back for usability. So what is new in edition 2?
All author royalties are used for further book editions and updates to further sustainable design and practice. Book sponsorship was used to keep the cost of the book down and to enable to donate books to local libraries as part of a 'bookswap'. The book is printed and bound in the UK on 100% FSC paper. Edition 2 is bound with a flexible back.
